Sometimes We Are the Lighthouse

Sometimes, we NEED a lighthouse.

One year ago today, Holly and I were in Ireland.

If you’ve been around me for very long, you probably know how much that trip meant to us. It wasn’t just a vacation—it was one of those rare experiences that quietly changes something deep inside you.

The people welcomed us like old friends. The music seemed woven into the very fabric of the land. The scenery was breathtaking, with every winding road revealing another postcard-worthy view. Even now, a year later, so many moments remain crystal clear in my memory.

I miss Ireland.

Truth be told, I’m more than ready to go back.

But that’s a story for another day.

One place in particular has stayed with me ever since: Hook Lighthouse.

Located on the rugged Hook Peninsula in County Wexford, Hook Lighthouse has watched over Ireland’s southeastern coast for nearly 800 years. Long before GPS, radar, or electronic navigation, sailors depended on its steady light to help them avoid dangerous rocks and find safe passage home. The site itself has even older roots, with monks said to have kept a beacon burning there centuries before the current tower was built.

Think about that for a moment.

Wars have come and gone. Empires have risen and fallen. Generations have lived their entire lives beneath its watchful gaze. Storm after storm has battered its stone walls.

Yet the light continues to shine.

As I stood there looking out across the sea, I realized the lighthouse isn’t remarkable because it stops storms. It doesn’t.

It simply stands where it’s supposed to stand and faithfully does what it was created to do.

That thought has stayed with me ever since.

Life can feel a lot like sailing through unfamiliar waters. Some days the seas are calm, and everything seems to make sense. Other days grief rolls in like heavy fog. Anxiety clouds our judgment. Depression steals our sense of direction. Stress, illness, financial worries, broken relationships, and uncertainty can make it difficult to know which way is safe.

During seasons like that, we all need a lighthouse.

Sometimes that lighthouse is a trusted friend who listens without trying to fix everything. Sometimes it’s a counselor who helps us see a path we couldn’t see ourselves. Sometimes it’s family, a pastor, a support group, or simply someone who reminds us that we’re not walking through the darkness alone.

One of the greatest lies our minds can tell us is that asking for help is weakness.

It isn’t.

Even experienced sailors depended on the lighthouse. They weren’t less capable because they needed its guidance. They were wise enough to recognize that some dangers couldn’t always be seen from the deck of their own ship.

The same is true for us.

There are seasons when we simply need someone else’s light.

But there’s another side to that lesson.

There are also times when we are called to be the lighthouse.

Not by having all the answers.

Not by pretending life is perfect.

Not by rescuing everyone we meet.

Just by being present.

By offering encouragement instead of criticism.

By checking in on someone who has quietly disappeared from social media.

By sending the text that says, “I’ve been thinking about you.”

By reminding someone that tomorrow is still worth believing in.

A lighthouse doesn’t chase ships.

It simply shines.

Perhaps that’s enough for us, too.

We don’t always know whose life we’re touching. We may never realize that a kind word, a listening ear, or a simple act of compassion helped someone make it through one more difficult day.

The light doesn’t have to be spectacular.

It just has to be faithful.

As I remember Ireland today, I find myself grateful for an ancient lighthouse that has become much more than a tourist attraction in my memory. It’s become a reminder that none of us were meant to navigate life’s storms alone.

Some days we’ll be the light.

Some days we’ll need to follow one.

And maybe that’s exactly how grace was always meant to work.
