My wife and I have been preparing for a rummage sale.
Like most people, we’ve accumulated a lifetime of things.
Closets full of clothes. Shelves lined with keepsakes. Boxes tucked into corners of the basement that haven’t been opened in years. Kitchen gadgets that once seemed indispensable. Decorations that have quietly waited for “next season” for several seasons now.
It’s funny how life works. We don’t usually notice how much we’ve accumulated until we begin the process of letting it go.
As I sorted through another box, I found myself saying something I’ve repeated more than once over the past few days.
“I forgot I even had this.”
That simple sentence has stayed with me.
If I forgot I owned it, what place did it really have in my life?
Some of these things once meant a great deal to me. They represented a hobby I was excited about, a season of life I enjoyed, or simply something I’d worked hard to afford. At one point, I probably couldn’t imagine parting with them.
Now they’re waiting to become someone else’s treasure.
And that’s exactly as it should be.
It made me realize that almost everything I’ve ever owned has eventually fulfilled its purpose and moved on.
Every car I’ve driven.
Every camera I’ve carried.
Every guitar I’ve played.
Every article of clothing I’ve worn.
Every piece of furniture that once filled a room.
Sooner or later, they all leave us. They’re sold, donated, handed down, recycled, or simply worn out. We don’t really own them forever. We simply care for them for a little while.
There’s something freeing about admitting that.
It reminds me that so much of what feels permanent really isn’t.
The older I get, the more I realize that life isn’t measured by the things that pass through our hands. It’s measured by the moments that pass through our hearts.
I don’t remember buying most of my cameras, but I remember standing on a quiet trail as the morning sun broke through the trees.
I don’t remember every guitar I’ve owned, but I remember songs shared with friends, evenings filled with laughter, and audiences that sang along.
I don’t remember every vehicle I’ve driven, but I remember the conversations that happened on long road trips and the places those cars carried me.
The objects fade into the background.
The experiences remain.
Perhaps that’s because things are meant to be used, but moments are meant to become memories.
As I looked around the room, another thought quietly settled in.
I’ve spent years collecting things.
Not because I was trying to. It just happened one purchase, one gift, one “I’ll probably use this someday” at a time.
I suspect most of us live that way.
Our homes slowly become museums of former interests and forgotten intentions. We keep things because they might be useful someday, because they remind us of who we were, or because getting rid of them feels somehow like losing a part of ourselves.
But maybe the opposite is true.
Maybe letting go makes room for what matters most.
Not just more space in the closet.
More space in life.
Less time organizing possessions.
More time taking walks.
Less energy maintaining things.
More energy nurturing relationships.
Less attention on what we own.
More attention on who we’re becoming.
When my life is over, someone else will own almost everything I’ve called mine.
That’s not a sad thought.
It’s simply the way life works.
The cameras will photograph someone else’s adventures.
The guitars may play someone else’s songs.
The furniture will hold someone else’s family gatherings.
Life has a beautiful way of passing things from one set of hands to another.
But there is one thing no rummage sale will ever contain.
The memories.
The quiet conversations with Holly over morning coffee.
The laughter around the dinner table.
The unexpected kindness of a stranger.
The peace of watching birds gather at the feeder.
The feeling of standing beside the ocean.
The satisfaction of helping someone who needed it.
Those moments don’t take up shelf space.
They don’t gather dust.
They don’t need to be packed into boxes.
Instead, they become part of us. They shape us. They remind us who we are.
As I carried another box toward the growing pile for the rummage sale, I realized we weren’t just clearing out our house.
We were being reminded of something far more important.
Life was never about collecting things.
It was about collecting moments that become stories, stories that become memories, and memories that quietly become the legacy we leave behind.
So if there’s one thing I hope to accumulate in the years ahead, it isn’t another shelf full of possessions.
It’s another sunset.
Another conversation with an old friend.
Another chance to make music.
Another walk with my wife.
Another opportunity to laugh until it hurts.
Those are the things worth holding onto.
Everything else, sooner or later, belongs to someone else.
